With the new football season now in full swing, here at TFC HQ, we had intended to take a look at how the early runners and riders were shaping up but then West Ham played Milwall and sadly stole the headlines.
When the two teams were drawn against each other in this, the second round of the Carling Cup, alarm bells started ringing around the country with a sharp intake of breath from almost every football fan. And last night, we saw why.
Before the match even kicked off there were reports of trouble, reports that grew as the match progressed, including a stabbing of a West Ham fan at a nearby tube station.
At a time when, rumbling suggestions of bringing back terracing continue to be tentatively suggested and in a week that has seen Jermaine Defoe subjected to terrible abuse from West Ham fans at the weekend- relating to the death of his half-brother a few months ago along with claims that Carlton Cole was also victim to racial abuse in last nights tie, we are reminded that the ugly side of football still remains lingering beneath the surface.
